Understand the art
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art built around controlling position, escaping disadvantageous situations and applying submission techniques. It emphasizes timing, leverage, body mechanics and problem-solving rather than relying on strength alone.
Training develops skills in both standing exchanges and ground grappling. At Pure Grappling, we teach the connections between takedowns, guard work, passing, positional control, escapes and submissions—so techniques become part of a coherent game, not just isolated moves.
Learn to manage grips, distance and balance, and connect standing exchanges to effective ground positions.
Understand how to create and remove space, retain guard, pass intelligently and establish stable control.
Build sound escapes and defensive awareness while learning to apply submissions with control and responsibility.

The Pure Grappling approach
Led by Ryan Cheng, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, our training focuses on understanding why techniques work—and how to adapt them to different builds, strengths and experience levels.

Excerpts from students' own testimonials. Selected to highlight technical growth, well-rounded instruction and individual adaptation.

“For over a year and a half I had the great pleasure to have weekly private lessons with Professor Ryan and they benefited my Jiu-jitsu immensely. I was able to get all the answers to my questions and Professor Ryan helped me to fix holes in my game that I couldn't see. Moreover, Professor Ryan gave me drills and techniques to work on that were suitable to my body type and level of experience.”

“He is a humble person who is full of passion and knowledge in jiujitsu. As a smaller jiujitsu player, he pays a lot of attention on details which help to improve one’s technique. His teaching is all round, so no matter what aspect of the game (take down, passing, guards)you are trying to improve, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ryan.”

“Few instructors painstakingly look into most techniques and dissect them based on body mechanics. His greatest strength is his bird eye’s view. There are different roads to the peak- he is the guide who not only shows you all possible paths that might be suitable for you, but will walk with you towards the peak.”
